Licensing Examination
General Information
The Licensing Examination is normally held twice annually and comprises the following 3 parts:
Part I – Written Examination
This Written Test consists of 2 multiple-choice-question papers for 8 subjects. Each question contains 5 choices of answer. It is designed to test candidates’ professional knowledge in Applied Basic Sciences; Medicine and Surgery in relation to Dentistry; Dental Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and Medical Emergencies in relation to Dentistry; Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology; Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics; Conservative Dentistry; Prosthodontics; and Periodontology, Preventive Dentistry and Dental Public Health. Questions are in both English and Chinese.
Part II – Practical Test
The Practical Test is designed to test the candidate’s manual dexterity and professional competence. A full set of instruments will be issued to all candidates attending this part (Part II) of the examination. Candidates can answer in English or Cantonese (choice to be made in application form).
Part III – Clinical Examination
The Clinical Examination consists of 3 sections, namely (i) Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, (ii) Conservative Dentistry, Periodontology, Prosthodontics, and (iii) Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, and is designed to test the candidate’s ability to apply his professional knowledge to clinical situations. The Clinical Examination may be accompanied by a viva voce examination. Candidates can answer in English or Cantonese (choice to be made in application form).
Each candidate must pass Part I Written Test before applying to sit for Part II or Part II and Part III.
