Frequently Asked Questions
Before the Examination / Eligibility
- In order to be eligible to sit for the LE, an applicant has to be a holder of a dental degree or a dental qualification acceptable to the and such dental degree or dental qualification must consist of not less than 4 years’ full-time dental training. All applications for sitting the LE are considered by the Examination Committee ("EC") of the Council on individual basis.
- The council does not have a list of approved dental qualifications for sitting the LE. All applications for sitting the LE are considered by the EC of the Council on individual basis.
- The LE is held twice a year normally. The first sitting of the LE is usually held from April to July while the second sitting of the LE is usually held from September to December. Details of each sitting of the LE, including the examination schedule and application period, are announced in the website of the Council https://www.dchk.org.hk. The LE consists of three separate parts and all three parts of LE are held in Hong Kong. All candidates are required to come to Hong Kong to sit the LE.
Application Procedures
- Applicants are required to submit a completed application form together with the required supporting documents in person or by post to the Council Secretariat (address: 4/F, Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building, 99 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong) during the application period.
- Different categories of applicant should submit the required application forms as follows –
- Part I
(a) For new applicants – Application Form (Form 1)
(b) For old / re-sit candidates – Application Form (Form 2)
- Part II & III
(c) For old / re-sit candidates of Parts II and III – Application Form (Form 3)
- Application form is made specific to each sitting of the LE and applicants are reminded to complete the form as appropriate.
- Declaration can be made before a Commissioner of Oaths, a solicitor, a Justice of Peace or a Notary Public to confirm that all information and documents provided for the application are true and accurate. Declaration service before a Commissioner of Oaths is available free of charge at the Dental Council Secretariat for applicants who need to make declarations for their application.
- Applicants may refer to the “Checklist of Supporting Documents” in the application form for the list of supporting documents required.
- All photocopies of the supporting documents must be notarized by a Notary Public. Photocopies certified by other persons, such as solicitor or Justice of Peace, will NOT be accepted. Applicants may also bring along the original documents in person to the Council Secretariat for verification during the application period.
- All supporting documents provided must be in English or Chinese. If any of the supporting documents are not in the aforesaid languages, an official English translation, such as translation provided by the issuing institutions or authorities of the documents should be provided.
- No. Candidates are required to pass Part I of the LE before proceeding to Part II or to Parts II and III. Upon obtaining a pass in Part I, candidates are allowed to apply for sitting the LE in the same diet for –
(a) only Part II; or
(b) both Parts II and III irrespective of the result of Part II.
- For candidates who wish to apply for sitting Part III only in any diet of the LE, they must first obtain a pass in Part II.
- The LE consists of three separate parts and the examination fee for each part is HK$10,650. Applicants will be informed of the payment arrangement by email when eligibility is confirmed.
Preparation for the Licensing Examinations
- The LE consists of three separate parts. Part I is Written Test in the format of multiple-choice questions. Part II is Practical Test and Part III is Clinical Examination. Please refer to the Candidate’s Guide.for details of each part of the examination.
- The LE comprises of three separate parts – Part I Written Test, Part II Practical Test and Part III Clinical Examination. Part I Written Test consists of multiple-choice question papers for 8 subjects in both English and Chinese. For Part II Practical Test and Part III Clinical Examination, candidates may use English or Cantonese during the examination and must state their choice of language before the examination.
- The Council does not provide past papers nor organize revision courses for the LE. Candidates should note that it is not a prerequisite to join any revision course(s) before they apply or to sit the LE.
- To prepare for the LE, candidates may refer to the suggested booklist, sample questions and the list of instruments provided.

- Registration of dentists in Hong Kong is governed by the Dentists Registration Ordinance (“DRO”), Cap. 156 of the Laws of Hong Kong. Any person who have passed the LE can apply for registration as dentist and there is no provision in DRO setting the time limit for registration as a dentist in Hong Kong after passing the LE.
