Examination Committee and Board of Examiners

(I) Examination Committee

The Examination Committee (“EC”) is set up under section 5AC of the Dentists Registration Ordinance. According to section 5I of the Ordinance, the EC may perform the following functions –

  1. any function about the Licensing Examination delegated to it under section 7B of the Ordinance;
  2. to oversee matters relating to the setting of standards for the Licensing Examination;
  3. to design the Licensing Examination; and
  4. to make recommendations to the Dental Council on the policies regarding —
    1. the Licensing Examination;
    2. the criteria for exemption from the Licensing Examination or any part of the Licensing Examination;
    3. the extension of an internship period under section 8A(4)(a) of the Ordinance;
    4. the shortening or extension of a period of assessment under section 8B(4)(a) of the Ordinance;
    5. the termination of an internship under section 8A(5) of the Ordinance; and
    6. the termination of a period of assessment under section 8B(5) of the Ordinance.

Composition

According to section 5H of the Ordinance, the EC shall consist of the following members appointed by the Dental Council –

  1. 3 members of the Dental Council (one of them shall be the chairperson);
  2. 2 registered dentists, who are full-time members of the teaching staff of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong, nominated by the University of Hong Kong;
  3. 2 registered specialist dentists nominated by the Council of the Academy of Medicine;
  4. 2 registered dentists, who are public officers, nominated by the Director of Health;
  5. 2 registered dentists nominated by the Council of the Hong Kong Dental Association; and
  6. 1 registered dentist appointed by the Dental Council to be responsible for conducting the Licensing Examination.

(II) Board of Examiners

The Dental Council has appointed a Board of Examiners (“BoE”) to assist in administering the Licensing Examination (“LE”) of the Council and to conduct the LE.

The composition of the BoE is as follows –

  1. 5 registered dentists, who are full-time members of the teaching staff of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong, nominated by the University of Hong Kong;
  2. 1 registered dentist nominated by the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong;
  3. 1 registered dentist nominated by the Hong Kong Dental Association; and
  4. 1 registered dentist being a public officer and nominated by the Department of Health.
